If Everything Is Connected

I met someone today.

Not someone I knew. Not someone I was looking for. Just a random stranger—an old man I happened to talk to for a while.

Sometimes, life puts people in front of us without giving us a reason.

We started talking, and somehow the conversation moved beyond the usual questions. He spoke about his life, the moments he cherished, the people he had loved, the things he had lost, and the things he had learned along the way.

There was something strangely peaceful about listening to him.

At some point, he asked me,

“Do you have feelings for someone?”

Then, almost casually,

“Are you planning to get married?”

I smiled.

There are some stories you don’t tell—not because they don’t matter, but because they matter too much.

So I left that story untold.

I thought that would be the end of it.

But then he looked at me and said something I still can’t quite explain.

“He knew what you were willing to sacrifice for her.”

I looked at him.

He continued,

“Your living. Your growth. Maybe even parts of the person you were becoming.”

And then came the sentence that made everything inside me go quiet.

“Maybe that’s why He didn’t want you together.”

I didn’t know what to say.

He wasn’t there when it happened. He didn’t know the conversations, the silences, the things I said, the things I didn’t say, or the things I spent months trying to understand.

Yet somehow, it felt like he had read a page from a story I had never shown him.

He paused and said,

“There is always a reason for everything. Sometimes we understand it immediately. Sometimes we understand it years later. And sometimes we never do. But somehow, it’s all connected.”

I stood there.

Silent.

For once, my mind had nothing to argue with.

I don’t know who that man really was.

I don’t know why our paths crossed today.

And I don’t know if I’ll ever meet him again.

Maybe he was just an old man sharing what life had taught him.

Maybe it was nothing more than a coincidence.

Or maybe sometimes a stranger says something at exactly the right moment—not to give you an answer, but to leave you with a question.

And now, as I write this, I have a few.

If there was never anything meant to happen between two people…

then why did the feeling happen at all?

If everything is connected…

then why did our paths cross?

If some people are only meant to be chapters and not endings…

why do certain chapters stay with us long after the story has moved on?

And if everything happens for a reason…

then perhaps the reason wasn’t always to keep someone.

Maybe sometimes, the reason is to become someone.

Maybe some people enter our lives not to stay, but to change the direction in which we were walking.

Maybe the love was real.

Maybe the ending was necessary.

Maybe both can be true.

And perhaps that’s the part I am still learning—

Not every feeling needs to become a relationship.

Not every connection needs a future.

And not every unanswered question needs an answer.

Some things simply happen.

We carry them.

We grow around them.

And one day, years later, we might finally understand why.

Or maybe we won’t.

Maybe that’s what being human is—

to keep walking even when the story doesn’t explain itself.
